Newsroom: Bob Nelson Chosen to Help with San Diego’s Transformation

Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins Selects Mayoral Transition Team

San Diego, CA – July 29, 2005 – Bob Nelson was selected today as part of the transition team for Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins. With the resignation of Mayor Dick Murphy, Councilmember Atkins was unanimously appointed by the council as the acting mayor until the next mayor is sworn in on December 5.

"My goal is not to be a simple caretaker, but to move the city forward and make it better for the new mayor," Atkins said at the announcement of her transition aides. With this new responsibility, Atkins’ duties go beyond fulfilling the elected position that she has served for the last 4 ˝ years as Councilmember for District Three, but to also take on the responsibility of the Mayor of San Diego for the next four months. She faces challenges of restoring financial stability to San Diego and preparing the city for the transition to the strong-mayor form of government.

Nelson has been active in community outreach for government agencies and private interests since 1973. He has served as a district field representative for two county supervisors, as a community relations strategist and tactician for a wide variety of corporations, trade associations, labor unions and political campaigns in several states. He is a member of the City of San Diego Public Utilities Advisory Commission, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Community Advisory Board, and the Mayor’s LGBT Advisory Committee. He has served on the San Diego Strong Mayor Charter Amendment Task Force and campaign steering committee, on both the American and International Association of Political Consultants, as a Presidential appointee to the bipartisan U.S. Competitiveness Policy Council, as transition chairman and interim chief of staff for a U.S. Senator, and as a political aide in local government.

Atkins’ transition team includes:

Michel Anderson, a local civic leader and government relations consultant;
Nikki Clay, incoming president of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce;
Paul Grasso, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Mayor´s office;
Bob Nelson, President of BNA Communications;
Jane Potter, acting Chief of Staff to District Three;
Denise Price, Atkins´ current Chief of Staff;
Kevin Tilden, director of external affairs for a local water company;
Dave Watson, a local attorney.

Atkins believes this unique team of talented individuals can help her manage the duties required as acting Mayor while loyally serving her own District Three.
